Coaching points
- Ball-carrier holds until the overlap is a threat, then plays or takes the 1v1.
- Runner goes outside if the defender steps in, underlap if they drop toward the touchline.
- Cutback is along the six-yard, not floated to the keeper.
- Far-post runner arrives as the ball is struck, not three seconds early.
Phrases to use
- “Hold, then play.”
- “Outside if they step in.”
- “Cutback, don’t hang it.”
- “Arrive with the ball.”
Progressions
- Add a third defender.
- Must finish first time.
- Start from a switch, not a set pass.
Regressions
- No pressure on the first two touches.
- Remove the far-post runner and finish from the cutback zone with a cone target.
Common mistakes
The overlap runs before the ball is under control and goes offside or stands still.
The runner times the sprint off the first positive touch, not the coach’s voice.
The cross is a hopeful loft into the six.
If the six is packed, cut it back. The dangerous zone is the penalty spot.
Far-post runner is there waiting and the defender marks him for free.
Late. Arrive as the ball is struck.
