Coaching points
- The support player is a wall or an overlap — they don’t stand even with the ball.
- If the defender jumps the ball, the wall is on. Play it first time.
- If the defender sits, carry and the partner overlaps.
- Finish. The combination is not the point if nobody shoots.
Phrases to use
- “Don’t stand even.”
- “If they jump, wall.”
- “If they sit, overlap.”
- “Combination, then shoot.”
Progressions
- Must combine before a shot.
- Add a recovering third defender.
- One-touch finish.
Regressions
- Defenders cannot intercept the first pass.
- Bigger channel.
- 3v2.
Common mistakes
Both attackers occupy the same line and the wall has no angle.
One high, one short. The short one is the wall.
They combine sideways forever.
The second pass goes north. If it doesn’t, it’s keep-away.
The overlap is a jog.
Sprint after the first positive touch. The overlap is a threat or it isn’t.
