Coaching points
- The nearest player jumps only on a poor touch, a square pass, or a ball into the channel — never on a guess.
- The covering teammate tucks inside the jumper’s line, a step deeper, not square.
- Far-side players squeeze 8 yards as the ball travels. The block moves; it does not stretch.
- If beaten, recover goal-side first. Restack second. Do not chase in a straight line.
Phrases to use
- “Jump the trigger, not the guess.”
- “Cover inside the jumper.”
- “The block travels.”
- “Recover first. Restack second.”
Progressions
- Remove one defender.
- Attackers may play in behind after two passes.
- Add a 6-second shot clock once the ball crosses the midline.
Regressions
- Freeze on the whistle so the block can check distances.
- Attackers limited to two touches.
- Defenders start 8 yards deeper.
Common mistakes
The whole line jumps together and leaves a lane in behind.
Only the nearest player jumps. Everyone else drops a step and tucks.
Far-side winger stays high and the block stretches 40 yards.
Far-side tucks to the edge of the box. Compact first, then press.
Beaten defender keeps sprinting at the ball from behind.
Curve the recovery to get goal-side, then find the next line.
