Coaching points
- Get there fast, then slow down. Do not dive in on the first touch.
- Show the attacker one way — usually their weaker foot or the sideline.
- Tackle when the ball is out of the foot, not when they are looking at you.
- If beaten, curve back goal-side. Do not chase in a straight line.
Phrases to use
- “Fast, then slow.”
- “Show a side.”
- “Win it when it’s out of the foot.”
- “Curve back, don’t chase.”
Progressions
- Defender starts even with the attacker.
- Add a second attacker as a bounce option.
- Shrink the channel to 8 yards.
Regressions
- Defender cannot tackle for the first 3 seconds — only delay.
- Attacker is two-touch.
- Widen the channel so recovery is possible.
Common mistakes
Defender sprints in and the attacker taps it past them.
Close the space, then get side-on. The last 3 yards are a jockey, not a sprint.
Defender backs straight toward their own goal and never shows a side.
Angle the body. One foot closer to the ball, hips open to the sideline.
After being beaten they stop.
The next job is recovery. Curve, get goal-side, then the next 1v1.
